Proverbs 3:7 (KJV)

“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.”


EXPLANATION 💡

Proverbs 3:7 gives us a simple but powerful lesson about humility, wisdom, reverence for God, and turning away from evil. The verse warns us not to become so confident in our own understanding that we stop listening to God.

The first part says, “Be not wise in thine own eyes.” This does not mean that wisdom or intelligence is bad. In fact, the Bible encourages us to seek wisdom. What this verse warns against is thinking that we know everything and therefore do not need God's guidance. 🙏

There is a difference between being wise and believing that you are always right. A person can be educated, experienced, successful, and knowledgeable while still making poor decisions when they rely completely on their own understanding.

Sometimes, we can become so confident in our plans that we stop asking God what He wants. We may say, “I know what I'm doing,” “I don't need anyone's advice,” or even “I know better.” Proverbs 3:7 reminds us that true wisdom includes recognizing our limitations.

This connects closely with the earlier message in Proverbs 3:5-6, where we are told to trust in the Lord rather than depending entirely on our own understanding. God sees things from a perspective that we cannot see. We only know what is happening around us today, but God knows the beginning, the present, and the end.

The second part of the verse says, “fear the LORD.” In this context, fearing God does not simply mean being terrified of Him. It refers to having deep reverence, respect, honour, and awe for God. ❤️

When we genuinely respect God, His instructions become important to us. We begin to ask questions such as: “Is this decision pleasing to God?” “Does this action agree with God's Word?” “Am I doing this because it is right, or simply because I want to?”

The final instruction is, “and depart from evil.” Notice that the verse does not merely tell us to recognize evil. It tells us to depart from it—to turn away from it.

Knowing that something is wrong is one thing; having the courage to walk away from it is another. 🚶‍♂️ Sometimes, departing from evil means refusing to participate in something that everyone else considers normal. Sometimes it means ending a dishonest practice, walking away from destructive relationships, refusing to spread gossip, rejecting hatred, or choosing not to take advantage of another person.

It may also require us to examine ourselves honestly. We can easily identify wrongdoing in other people while ignoring areas in our own lives that need correction. This verse encourages us to look inward and allow God's wisdom to guide our choices.

Proverbs 3:7 teaches us that humility is an important part of genuine wisdom. A wise person understands that they do not have all the answers. Instead of trusting only in personal knowledge, they remain open to God's direction.

Imagine having a map while travelling through an unfamiliar place. You may know how to drive, but if you ignore the map because you believe you already know the road, you can easily get lost. In a similar way, God's Word provides direction for our lives. We may have experience and intelligence, but we still need God's guidance.

Another important lesson is that our relationship with God should affect the way we live. Reverencing God should not remain only in our words, prayers, or church activities. It should influence our decisions, relationships, finances, work, conversations, and private choices.

So, Proverbs 3:7 is essentially saying: Do not become so confident in yourself that you ignore God. Respect and honour Him, listen to His wisdom, and deliberately turn away from what is wrong. 🌟

This is a challenging message because pride can be very subtle. Sometimes we do not openly reject God; we simply stop seeking His direction. We make our plans first and only remember God when something goes wrong.

But God invites us to live differently. True wisdom begins with recognizing that God knows more than we do. When we humble ourselves before Him, seek His guidance, and choose to walk away from evil, we position ourselves to live according to His purpose.

Is there an area where you have been relying more on your own understanding than on God's wisdom?

Perhaps there is a decision you are trying to make, a habit you know you need to leave behind, or a situation where pride is making it difficult for you to accept correction.

Ask yourself: “Am I truly allowing God to guide my decisions, or am I simply asking Him to bless the decisions I have already made?”

And when you recognize something that is not pleasing to God, are you willing to “depart from evil” rather than making excuses for it?
