John 1 Verse 1 Explained

VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE

John 1:1 (KJV)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

John 1:1 is one of the most powerful and important verses in the Bible. Although it contains only a few words, it reveals a profound truth about the identity of Jesus Christ, His relationship with God the Father, and His existence before the creation of the world.

This verse teaches us that Jesus did not begin to exist when He was born in Bethlehem. He existed before creation, was with God from the beginning, and shares the divine nature of God. To understand this verse properly is to understand an important foundation of the Christian faith.

EXPLANATION

1. "In the Beginning" – Jesus Existed Before Everything Was Created

The verse begins with the words, "In the beginning." These words are very significant because they take us back to the beginning of creation.

Interestingly, the opening words of John's Gospel are similar to the opening words of the Bible in Genesis 1:1:

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." – Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

While Genesis tells us about the beginning of creation, John 1:1 reveals something remarkable about Jesus: He was already in existence when the beginning took place.

Think about this for a moment. Everything we know has a beginning. Human beings are born, buildings are constructed, businesses are established, and nations are formed. Even the sun, moon, and stars are part of God's creation.

But Jesus was not created. He existed before all these things came into existence.

This means that Jesus is not simply a great teacher who appeared at a particular point in human history. He is eternal. His existence is not limited by time, age, or the physical world.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, that was not the beginning of His existence. It was the moment He entered human history in the flesh.

The lesson: Never underestimate the identity of Jesus Christ. He is not merely a historical religious figure. He existed before creation and has authority over everything that was made.

2. "Was the Word" – Jesus Is the Word of God

The next expression is "was the Word." This introduces one of the most important descriptions of Jesus in the Bible.

Why does John call Jesus "the Word"?

In simple terms, words are used to communicate thoughts, intentions, instructions, and messages. Through words, we reveal what is inside us and make ourselves understood by others.

In a similar way, Jesus is the perfect revelation of God to humanity. Through His life, teachings, actions, miracles, death, and resurrection, we understand God's character, love, truth, and purpose.

Jesus did not simply come to deliver a message from God. He is the living Word through whom God reveals Himself to the world.

Consider John 1:14, which explains that the Word became flesh and lived among us. This makes it clear that John is referring to Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus came into the world, people received messages from God through prophets, visions, dreams, and other means. But through Jesus, God revealed Himself in a unique and personal way.

When we study the life of Jesus, we see God's compassion towards the suffering, His concern for the lost, His hatred of sin, His mercy towards sinners, and His desire for humanity to receive salvation.

The lesson: If you want to understand God's character, study the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. He is God's Word revealed to humanity.

3. "And the Word Was With God" – Jesus Has Always Been in Relationship With the Father

This part of the verse tells us that the Word was with God.

It reveals that Jesus existed in a personal relationship with God the Father even before the creation of the world.

This is important because Christianity teaches that God is one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is known as the doctrine of the Trinity.

The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. Yet Christians do not believe in three separate gods. They believe in one God who exists in three persons.

John 1:1 helps us understand the relationship between the Father and the Son. Jesus was not created by the Father as an ordinary being. He existed with the Father eternally.

Think about the relationship between a father and a son. While human fathers and sons have separate beginnings and exist within time, the relationship between God the Father and Jesus Christ is eternal and divine.

Jesus was never absent from God's eternal existence. Before the world was formed, before humanity existed, and before the first sunrise, the Father and the Son already existed in perfect relationship.

The lesson: Jesus is not separate from God's divine purpose. He has always existed in unity and relationship with the Father.

4. "And the Word Was God" – Jesus Is Divine

This final part of John 1:1 is perhaps the most powerful statement in the entire verse:

"And the Word was God."

John is clearly declaring the divinity of Jesus Christ. He is not saying that Jesus was merely a good person, a prophet, an angel, or someone who represented God. He is declaring that Jesus possesses the very nature of God.

This truth is central to Christianity because it helps explain why Jesus has the authority to forgive sins, give eternal life, exercise divine power, and receive worship.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus demonstrated authority that goes beyond ordinary human ability.

  • He healed people suffering from various diseases.
  • He gave sight to the blind.
  • He raised the dead.
  • He calmed storms and walked on water.
  • He forgave sins.
  • He rose from the dead.

These miracles were not simply displays of extraordinary power. They revealed His divine identity and authority.

In John 10:30, Jesus also declared:

"I and my Father are one." – John 10:30 (KJV)

John 1:1 therefore establishes an important truth: Jesus is fully divine. Although He came into the world as a human being, He did not stop being God.

The lesson: Your faith in Jesus should be based on who He truly is. He is not merely someone to turn to when you need a miracle. He is Lord, Saviour, and God, worthy of your trust, worship, and obedience.

5. Jesus Was Not Created – He Is the Creator

John 1:1 becomes even more meaningful when we read the next verse, John 1:2, and John 1:3:

"All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made." – John 1:3 (KJV)

This tells us that Jesus was not part of creation. Rather, He was involved in bringing everything into existence.

Consider the world around you: the mountains, oceans, trees, animals, human beings, planets, and countless stars in the universe. All things were created through Him.

This means that the same Jesus who walked the streets of Jerusalem, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and died on the cross is the eternal Creator.

It also reminds us that our lives are not accidents. We exist because God created us, and our lives have meaning and purpose in His plan.

Sometimes, life becomes difficult, and we begin to question our purpose or wonder whether God understands what we are going through. Remembering that Jesus is the Creator reminds us that nothing about our existence is beyond His knowledge or authority.

The lesson: The One you call upon in prayer is greater than the problems you face. Jesus is the Creator, and nothing in creation is beyond His power.

6. What John 1:1 Means for Your Everyday Life

Understanding John 1:1 should influence more than your knowledge of Christian doctrine. It should change how you live and relate to Jesus.

If Jesus existed before creation, then He is not limited by time. Your past, present, and future are not beyond His knowledge.

If Jesus is the Word, then His teachings should become the foundation of your decisions. When you face difficult choices, His instructions should guide your actions.

If Jesus has always been with the Father, then you can trust that He is not an ordinary human being whose power is limited by circumstances.

And if Jesus is God, then He deserves more than occasional attention. He deserves your worship, obedience, love, and complete trust.

You may be facing financial difficulties, family challenges, disappointment, uncertainty, or unanswered prayers. Whatever your situation may be, remember that Jesus is not overwhelmed by the circumstances of your life.

He is the eternal Word, the divine Son of God, and the Creator of all things.

Let this truth strengthen your faith and remind you that you are placing your hope in someone whose power and existence are not limited by this world.

WHAT JOHN 1:1 TEACHES US

  • Jesus Christ existed before the creation of the world.
  • Jesus is the living Word of God and the perfect revelation of the Father.
  • Jesus has always existed in relationship with God the Father.
  • Jesus is divine and shares the nature of God.
  • Jesus was not created; all things were made through Him.
  • Our faith, worship, and obedience should be centred on the true identity of Jesus Christ.

Today's reminder: Jesus is more than a name we call when we are in trouble. He is the eternal Word, the Creator, and God. Let your relationship with Him be built on knowing who He truly is, trusting His Word, and allowing His teachings to guide your everyday life.

SELF REFLECTION

Take a moment to reflect on John 1:1.

Many people know the name of Jesus. Some grew up attending church, others read the Bible regularly, and many call upon Him whenever they face difficulties. But do we truly understand who Jesus is?

Do you see Him merely as someone who can solve your problems, provide for your needs, and answer your prayers? Or do you recognise Him as the eternal Son of God, the Creator, and the Lord of your life?

John 1:1 challenges us to look beyond the familiar name of Jesus and understand His true identity. It reminds us that the One who came into the world to save humanity existed long before the world itself.

If Jesus is truly Lord of your life, does your daily behaviour reflect that belief? Do His teachings influence your decisions, relationships, conversations, and priorities?

Today, make a conscious decision to know Jesus beyond religious activities. Study His Word, understand His teachings, trust His promises, and allow Him to shape your character.
