Matthew 5 Verse 4 Explained
π VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
Matthew 5:4 (KJV)
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
This verse is part of Jesus Christ's famous Sermon on the Mount, where He taught His followers about the values and attitudes that are important in the Kingdom of God. In this verse, Jesus declares that those who mourn are blessed because God will comfort them.
π‘ EXPLANATION
At first glance, this verse may seem confusing. How can someone who is mourning or grieving be considered blessed? In our human understanding, sadness and mourning are usually associated with pain, loss, and sorrow. However, Jesus reveals a deeper spiritual truth.
The word "blessed" means being favoured by God, spiritually prosperous, and experiencing His approval. Jesus is teaching that those who sincerely mourn will experience God's comfort and restoration. πΏ
Mourning in this verse can refer to several situations:
- π’ Mourning over the loss of a loved one.
- π Mourning because of personal sin and shortcomings.
- π Grieving over the brokenness and suffering in the world.
- π️ Feeling sorrow over separation from God's will and purpose.
Jesus assures believers that no tear goes unnoticed by God. He sees every pain, disappointment, heartbreak, and struggle. While the world may overlook our suffering, God does not.
One important meaning of this verse is godly sorrow. When a person recognises their sins and genuinely repents before God, that sorrow leads them closer to Him. Instead of condemnation, God offers forgiveness, mercy, and peace.
Another beautiful truth found in this verse is that God's comfort may come in different ways:
- π€ Through His presence.
- π Through His Word.
- π¨π©π§π¦ Through family and friends.
- ⛪ Through the church community.
- ✨ Through the hope and promises found in Christ.
Jesus never promised that His followers would never experience pain. Instead, He promised that they would never face their pain alone. God's comfort is greater than any sorrow we may experience.
This promise also points to the future. One day, God will completely remove sorrow, pain, and tears from the lives of His people. Those who trust in Him will experience eternal joy in His presence. π
Matthew 5:4 reminds us that sadness is not a sign that God has abandoned us. In many cases, it becomes an opportunity to experience His love, compassion, healing, and strength in a deeper way. When we bring our burdens to God, He meets us with comfort and hope.
Key Lesson: π God's comfort is available to everyone who brings their pain, grief, and repentance before Him.
