Colossians 3 Verse 1 Explained



VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”

— Colossians 3:1 (KJV)


EXPLANATION

Colossians 3:1 gives us a powerful reminder about what should happen when we genuinely begin a new life with Jesus Christ. Paul writes, “If ye then be risen with Christ”. This does not simply refer to physically rising from the dead. It speaks about a spiritual transformation—the new life believers receive through their relationship with Christ. ✝️

When a person puts their faith in Christ, their priorities are meant to change. The things that once controlled their attention should no longer have the same power over them. Instead, Paul encourages believers to “seek those things which are above.” In simple terms, this means we should intentionally pursue the things that are important to God. 🙏

Think about what normally occupies your mind throughout the day. 💭 Is it money, career, possessions, social media, popularity, entertainment, problems, relationships, or personal ambitions? These things are not necessarily wrong by themselves. However, when earthly concerns become more important than our relationship with God, they can easily take His place in our hearts.

Paul is therefore encouraging Christians to develop a heavenly perspective. Seeking the things above means allowing God's will, His Word, His character, and His kingdom to influence the way we live on earth.

Notice that Paul says “seek.” Seeking requires action. 🔎 It is intentional. A person who is seeking something does not simply sit around hoping to find it. They make an effort. In the same way, growing spiritually requires us to deliberately seek God through prayer, Scripture, obedience, worship, fellowship, and the daily decisions we make.

This verse also points our attention toward Jesus: “where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Jesus is not presented as someone distant or irrelevant to our everyday lives. He is exalted and seated at the right hand of God. Therefore, our focus should ultimately be directed toward Him. 👑

There is an important lesson here: what we focus on often influences how we live. If our minds are constantly consumed by temporary earthly things, our decisions may become driven by fear, greed, pride, comparison, or anxiety. But when we deliberately focus on Christ and the things of God, our attitudes and actions can begin to reflect His character.

For example, someone who is focused on Christ may choose forgiveness instead of revenge. ❤️ Someone seeking God's priorities may choose honesty even when dishonesty appears more profitable. Someone who values heavenly things may be willing to help another person without expecting anything in return. Someone who trusts Christ may continue believing even when circumstances are difficult.

Colossians 3:1 does not mean that Christians should ignore their responsibilities on earth. We still have families to care for, jobs to perform, bills to pay, communities to serve, and responsibilities to fulfil. Rather, the verse teaches us to handle these earthly responsibilities from a God-centered perspective.

In other words, Christianity is not about escaping everyday life. It is about allowing Christ to transform the way we live everyday life. 🌱

This verse also challenges us to examine our priorities. It is possible to say that we love God while allowing almost everything else to receive our time, attention, energy, and affection. Colossians 3:1 asks us to look beyond what is temporary and focus on what has eternal value.

What would change if you started each morning asking, “Lord, what do You want me to seek today?” That simple question can change the way you approach your work, relationships, finances, challenges, and opportunities.

Ultimately, Colossians 3:1 is an invitation to live like someone who has been given a new life in Christ. ✨ Instead of allowing the world to determine what matters most, we are encouraged to let Christ determine our priorities.

Seek Christ. Seek God's will. Seek eternal things. Let your earthly life reflect your heavenly hope. 🙌
