Jude 1:22 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE π
Jude 1:22 (KJV)
“And of some have compassion, making a difference:”
EXPLANATION π‘
Jude 1:22 is a short verse, but it carries a powerful message about compassion, patience, and the difference we can make in another person's life. The verse says, “And of some have compassion, making a difference.” Jude was encouraging believers to respond wisely and lovingly to people who were struggling, confused, or being influenced by wrong teachings.
To understand this verse properly, we need to look at the situation surrounding it. The book of Jude warns Christians about people who had entered the community of believers and were spreading ideas that could lead others away from the truth of God. Jude wanted faithful believers to remain strong in their faith while also helping those who were struggling spiritually.
That is where compassion becomes important. Jude did not tell Christians to treat every struggling person with anger, condemnation, or rejection. Instead, he said, “of some have compassion.” In other words, there are people who need to be approached with mercy and understanding.
❤️ Compassion can make a difference. Sometimes a person does not need someone to shout at them or remind them repeatedly about their mistakes. They may need someone who will listen, pray with them, encourage them, and patiently point them back toward God.
This does not mean that Christians should approve of everything people do. Compassion does not mean calling wrong behaviour right. Rather, it means loving the person while still standing firmly for God's truth.
Think about someone who has made a serious mistake. It is easy to look at that person and say, “You should have known better.” But what if instead you asked, “How can I help this person find their way back?” That change in attitude can completely transform the way we interact with people.
π± Jude 1:22 reminds us that our response to people matters. We may never know how much influence a simple act of kindness can have. A gentle conversation, a sincere prayer, an encouraging message, or an expression of forgiveness may become the turning point someone desperately needs.
There is also an important lesson here about how we represent Christ. As Christians, people may learn something about God's character through the way we treat them. If we claim to follow a compassionate God but constantly respond to struggling people with hatred, humiliation, or harsh judgment, our actions can push people further away.
Jesus demonstrated compassion throughout His earthly ministry. He showed mercy to people who were rejected by society, listened to those who were hurting, and offered hope to those who had lost their way. His compassion was never an excuse for sin; instead, His love gave people an opportunity to change.
π We should therefore ask ourselves: Am I making a difference in the lives of the people around me? When someone is struggling, do I immediately criticize them, or do I try to understand what they are going through? When someone makes a mistake, do I completely write them off, or do I leave room for restoration?
Another important lesson is that compassion requires wisdom. Jude's message in the surrounding verses shows that believers must help others while remaining careful about their own spiritual lives. We should not allow someone else's confusion or sinful behaviour to pull us away from God's truth.
⚖️ Christian compassion therefore involves both love and wisdom. We can show kindness without compromising our convictions. We can forgive without pretending that harmful behaviour does not matter. We can correct someone without humiliating them. And we can speak the truth while allowing God's love to guide our attitude.
Perhaps there is someone in your life right now who needs compassion. It could be a family member, friend, colleague, neighbour, church member, or even someone you have had a disagreement with. Instead of asking only, “What did this person do wrong?” consider asking, “What can I do that might help this person move closer to God?”
✨ Sometimes, the difference we make does not come from a big miracle or a dramatic speech. It can come through a small act of kindness, a listening ear, a forgiving heart, a thoughtful message, or a prayer offered at the right moment.
Jude 1:22 therefore challenges us to become people who do not simply notice the struggles of others but are willing to respond with compassion. Our words and actions can either build people up or push them further down. As followers of Christ, we are called to let God's love shine through our relationships.
Today, choose compassion. ❤️ Be someone whose presence gives another person hope, encouragement, and a reason to keep seeking God.
