John 10 Verse 10 Explained

πŸ“– VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE: John 10:10 KJV

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” — John 10:10 (KJV)

πŸ’‘ EXPLANATION

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to live an abundant life? Does it mean having plenty of money, owning a beautiful house, driving an expensive car, or achieving all your dreams?

While these things may bring comfort and happiness, Jesus teaches us in John 10:10 that the abundant life He offers goes far beyond material possessions.

In this powerful Bible verse, Jesus explains the difference between the destructive intentions of a thief and His own purpose for coming into the world. He came to give us life, and not just an ordinary existence, but a life filled with His presence, peace, love, purpose, and hope.

To understand this verse properly, we need to look at what Jesus means by the thief, why He came, and how we can experience the abundant life He promises.

πŸ‘ 1. Who Is the Thief in John 10:10?

Jesus begins by saying, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” In the surrounding passage, Jesus uses the picture of a shepherd and his sheep to explain His relationship with His followers.

A good shepherd protects, guides, and cares for the sheep, while a thief comes with harmful intentions. The thief represents a destructive force that threatens the lives and well-being of God's people.

In the wider Christian understanding of this passage, the thief is commonly associated with Satan, who opposes God's purposes and seeks to lead people away from the truth. Notice the three actions Jesus mentions:

 1. To steal: A thief takes away what does not belong to him. Spiritually, deception and temptation can rob people of their peace, faith, joy, and confidence in God's promises. 2. To kill: The thief's purpose goes beyond taking possessions. His intentions bring destruction and death. Sin and evil can cause terrible damage to individuals, families, and communities.
 3. To destroy: Destruction involves ruining what is valuable. It can affect relationships, character, hope, and a person's relationship with God.

These words remind us that we must be careful about the influences we allow into our lives. Not everything that looks attractive is beneficial, and not every path that promises happiness will lead us closer to God. However, this verse is not teaching us to blame Satan for every disappointment or difficulty.

Life includes challenges, personal decisions, natural consequences, and circumstances beyond our control. Instead, Jesus invites us to recognise the difference between what brings us closer to God and what leads us toward destruction.

❤️ 2. Jesus Came to Give Us Life

After describing the thief's destructive intentions, Jesus declares, “I am come that they might have life.” What a beautiful promise! Jesus did not come merely to establish a religion or give people a list of rules to follow.

He came to reconcile humanity to God and make eternal life available through Him. Sin separates humanity from God, but through His death and resurrection, Jesus provides the way to forgiveness, reconciliation, and a restored relationship with the Father.

This means that the life Jesus offers begins with more than physical existence. It includes spiritual renewal and the opportunity to walk with God. When we put our faith in Christ, we can experience forgiveness for our sins, a new direction for our lives, and the assurance that we belong to God.

Jesus offers us a life that has meaning beyond the things we can see and touch. Our value is not determined by our income, social status, educational qualifications, possessions, or the opinions of other people. Our relationship with God gives our lives a deeper foundation. Are you feeling lost, discouraged, or uncertain about your future?

Remember that Jesus invites you to come to Him. Your past does not have to determine your future, and your mistakes do not have to define your identity forever. Through His grace, you can begin again. πŸ™

🌿 3. What Does It Mean to Have Life More Abundantly?

Jesus continues, “and that they might have it more abundantly.” The word abundantly suggests a life that is full, rich, and overflowing. But does this mean that every Christian will become wealthy, remain healthy, or never experience suffering?

No. Jesus does not promise that His followers will be free from every problem or that faith will automatically make them rich.

An abundant life is first and foremost a life rooted in Christ. It involves knowing God, growing in faith, receiving His grace, and living according to His purposes. Consider some of the ways this abundance can be experienced:

✨ Abundant peace: Even when life is uncertain, you can bring your worries to God and trust Him to sustain you. This does not mean you will never feel anxious or sad; it means you do not have to face life's difficulties without hope.

❤️ Abundant love: Jesus teaches us to love God and our neighbours. As we grow in Him, we learn to forgive, show kindness, serve others, and treat people with compassion.

πŸ•Š️ Abundant joy: Christian joy is not dependent entirely on favourable circumstances. It grows from knowing God and trusting His faithfulness, even during difficult seasons.

πŸŽ― Abundant purpose: God calls us to live meaningful lives that reflect His character. Your work, family responsibilities, talents, and everyday interactions can become opportunities to serve others and glorify Him.

πŸ“– Abundant spiritual growth: Through prayer, studying God's Word, fellowship, and obedience, we grow in wisdom and learn to make choices that honour Him.

πŸŒ… The hope of eternal life: The life Jesus gives extends beyond our time on earth. Those who belong to Him have the hope of eternal life through His saving work.

These blessings show us that abundance is not simply about how much you possess, but about the life you experience through your relationship with Jesus.

You may have little money and still experience a deep sense of purpose, gratitude, and fellowship with God. You may also have many material possessions and still feel empty without Him. This does not mean material needs are unimportant. Food, shelter, healthcare, financial stability, and opportunities matter. Rather, Jesus teaches us that material possessions alone cannot provide the fullness of life our souls need.

πŸ›‘️ 4. Jesus Is the Good Shepherd Who Cares for You

John 10:10 becomes even more meaningful when we read it alongside John 10:11, where Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” A good shepherd does not abandon the sheep when danger comes. He cares for them and takes responsibility for their protection. Jesus uses this illustration to reveal His love and sacrifice. He willingly gave His life for humanity, demonstrating that His mission was not to exploit people but to save them. As believers, we can trust Jesus as our Shepherd. He guides us through His Word, teaches us His ways, and calls us to follow Him. Sometimes, His guidance may lead us away from things we desire but that would harm us. At other times, following Him may require patience, courage, sacrifice, or forgiveness.

God's love does not mean we will always get what we want. It means we can trust His character as we learn to follow His ways.

When you face difficult decisions, ask yourself: Does this choice honour God? Does it reflect truth, love, and integrity? Will it help me grow spiritually, or will it lead me away from Him? Learning to recognise the Shepherd's voice through Scripture and prayer helps us make wiser decisions.

πŸ™ 5. How Can You Experience the Abundant Life Today?

John 10:10 is not merely a verse to read and admire. It is an invitation to live differently. Here are five practical ways to apply its message to your everyday life.

 1. Put your relationship with Jesus first. Spend time praying, reading the Bible, and seeking to understand God's will. Do not allow your relationship with Him to become something you remember only when you have problems.

 2. Guard your heart and mind. Be mindful of the information you consume, the company you keep, and the habits you develop. Reject deception, bitterness, hatred, and destructive influences. Seek relationships and activities that encourage truth, wisdom, and spiritual growth.

 3. Practise gratitude. Instead of measuring your life only by what you lack, take time to thank God for His goodness. Gratitude does not deny your struggles; it helps you recognise the blessings that remain even during difficult seasons.

 4. Love and serve others. Use your time, talents, and resources to encourage people. Sometimes, an abundant life is expressed through a kind word, a helping hand, a sincere apology, or a willingness to forgive.

 5. Trust God through difficult seasons. When life does not go as planned, remember that hardship does not automatically mean God has abandoned you. Seek His wisdom, accept appropriate support, and continue walking in faith. Abundant life does not mean a problem-free life; it means a life in which Christ remains your source of hope.

🌟 Remember: Jesus did not come merely to help you survive. He came to bring you into a restored relationship with God and to give you a life shaped by His love, truth, grace, and eternal hope.

πŸ’ SELF REFLECTION

Take a moment to reflect on John 10:10 today. Are you measuring the abundance of your life by your bank account, possessions, achievements, and social status, or are you also considering your relationship with God, your peace of mind, your love for others, and your spiritual growth?

Sometimes, we spend so much time chasing what we do not have that we forget the priceless gift Jesus has already offered us.

We may have achievements but lack peace, possessions but lack purpose, or many friends but still feel spiritually empty. Jesus invites us to discover a deeper kind of abundance through Him.
