Lamentations 3:22-23 Explained
π VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
— Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV
What a powerful reminder! ❤️ These verses speak about God's mercy, compassion, and faithfulness, even when life is difficult. They remind us that no matter how challenging yesterday may have been, God gives us a fresh expression of His mercy every morning.
π‘ EXPLANATION
The book of Lamentations was written during a very painful period in the history of Jerusalem. The city had experienced destruction, suffering, loss, and devastation. The people were going through circumstances that could easily make them feel hopeless and abandoned.
Yet, right in the middle of this sorrow, the writer makes a remarkable declaration: “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed.” π
In simple terms, he was recognizing that despite everything that had happened, God's mercy was still sustaining them. They had experienced terrible circumstances, but they had not been completely destroyed. There was still breath in their bodies, there was still hope, and there was still an opportunity to look toward God.
❤️ God's Mercy Keeps Us
Sometimes we look at our lives and focus only on what is going wrong. We think about the prayers that seem unanswered, the opportunities we have lost, the mistakes we have made, or the difficulties we are currently facing.
But this verse encourages us to stop and recognize something important: we are still here because God's mercy has sustained us.
There are many things we may never know God protected us from. There are battles we never saw, dangers we never recognized, and situations that could have ended differently. God's mercy is often working quietly behind the scenes. π‘️
This does not mean that Christians will never experience pain. Lamentations itself proves otherwise. Faith does not make us immune to difficult seasons. Instead, faith reminds us that God remains faithful even in the middle of those difficult seasons.
π§️ Compassion Does Not Fail
The verse continues: “because his compassions fail not.”
Human beings can become tired. Friends can disappoint us. People can change their minds. Even those who genuinely love us have limitations.
But God's compassion does not run out. His love and mercy are not exhausted because we are struggling. When we fall, we can turn back to Him. When we are discouraged, we can seek Him. When we make mistakes, we can ask for forgiveness and receive His grace.
That is incredibly encouraging. π
π “They Are New Every Morning”
Perhaps one of the most beautiful statements in this passage is: “They are new every morning.”
Think about what happens every morning. The previous day comes to an end, and a new day begins. Yesterday's failures do not have to determine today's decisions. Yesterday's disappointment does not have to destroy today's hope.
Every morning is another opportunity to experience God's mercy. π
This does not mean that every new day will be easy. It means that whatever the new day brings, God's faithfulness will still be present.
Maybe yesterday was difficult. Maybe you made a mistake. Maybe something did not work out the way you expected. Perhaps you went to bed worried about your future.
When you wake up, remember this truth: God's mercy has given you another day. You can pray again. You can try again. You can forgive again. You can trust God again. You can begin again.
π “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
The final declaration is simple but profound: “great is thy faithfulness.”
God's faithfulness is not based on how perfect our circumstances are. It is based on who He is.
When things are going well, God is faithful. When things are difficult, God is faithful. When we understand what He is doing, He is faithful. And even when we don't understand, He remains faithful. ❤️
This verse therefore gives us a reason to hope. Our hope is not ultimately based on our money, career, relationships, abilities, health, or circumstances. Those things can change.
Our ultimate hope is in a God whose mercy does not fail and whose faithfulness is great.

You may not have all the answers today. You may not know what tomorrow will bring. But you can take comfort in knowing that God's mercies are still available to you.
Take today one step at a time. Pray. Trust God. Learn from yesterday without allowing yesterday to imprison you. And when tomorrow comes, remember that God's compassion will not suddenly disappear.
