“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)


EXPLANATION 💡

Proverbs 16:9 gives us a simple but powerful lesson about planning, purpose, and trusting God. The verse says, “A man's heart deviseth his way,” which means that people naturally make plans for their lives. We think about where we want to go, what we want to achieve, the career we want to pursue, the people we want to marry, the businesses we want to build, and the kind of future we hope to have.

There is nothing wrong with making plans. In fact, planning is an important part of responsible living. God has given us the ability to think, dream, organize, make decisions, and prepare for the future. 📝 We should not simply live without direction or purpose. We can set goals, work hard, acquire knowledge, seek opportunities, and prepare ourselves for what lies ahead.

However, Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that our plans are not the final authority over our lives. We may make a plan, but God ultimately sees the entire journey in a way that we cannot. We can see today and perhaps imagine tomorrow, but God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end.

The second part of the verse says, “but the LORD directeth his steps.” This means that God has the ability to guide our journey even when our plans change. Sometimes, we may have a carefully designed plan, only to discover that circumstances take us in a completely different direction.

Perhaps you applied for a particular job but were not selected. Maybe you planned to start a business at a certain time, but the opportunity did not materialize. Perhaps a relationship ended even though you thought it would last forever. You may have wanted to move in one direction, but an unexpected opportunity opened somewhere else.

These moments can be confusing. 😔 We may ask, “Why did this happen? Did I make the wrong decision? Has God forgotten me?”

Proverbs 16:9 encourages us to remember that a changed plan does not necessarily mean a failed life. Sometimes, God can use an unexpected change of direction to lead us somewhere we never imagined.

Think about a person using a navigation system while driving. The driver may know the destination, but the route can change because of traffic, road construction, an accident, or a closed road. The driver may initially become frustrated, but the navigation system can calculate another route to reach the destination.

In a similar way, we may have an idea of where we want our lives to go, but God knows the best route. What looks like a delay to us may actually be preparation. What looks like a closed door may protect us from something we cannot see. What looks like a setback may become the beginning of something better. 🚪✨

This does not mean that we should stop making decisions or become passive. Trusting God does not mean sitting around waiting for everything to happen automatically. We still have responsibilities. We should plan, pray, work, learn, and make wise decisions.

The important difference is that we should submit our plans to God rather than demanding that God follow our plans.

There is a significant difference between saying, “God, this is my plan, and I need You to make it happen,” and saying, “Lord, this is what I desire, but please guide me according to Your will.” 🙏

The second attitude demonstrates humility and trust. It recognizes that God's wisdom is greater than our own.

Sometimes, we become so attached to what we want that we struggle when God redirects us. We may believe that a particular job, person, opportunity, location, or achievement is the only path to happiness. But God sees things we cannot see. He understands consequences that are beyond our present knowledge.

This verse therefore teaches us to hold our plans with open hands. Dream. Plan. Work hard. Pursue excellence. But leave room for God to redirect you. 🌱

When God changes your direction, do not immediately assume that your life is falling apart. Take time to pray and ask, “Lord, what are You teaching me through this situation, and where are You leading me?”

Another important lesson is patience. God's direction may not always happen according to our preferred timetable. We may want immediate answers, immediate success, or immediate results. But sometimes the journey itself is part of God's preparation.

Imagine planting a seed. 🌱 You cannot plant it today and demand a mature tree tomorrow. There is a process. The seed must develop roots before the growth becomes visible. Similarly, God may be working in areas of your life that you cannot yet see.

Therefore, if your life currently looks different from the way you imagined it, do not lose hope. Your current situation may not be the final chapter.

Proverbs 16:9 invites us to combine human responsibility with divine dependence. We make plans, but we trust God with the outcome. We take steps, but we ask Him to direct those steps. We pursue opportunities, but we remain willing to change direction when He closes one door and opens another.

Ultimately, this verse reminds us that you do not have to understand the entire journey before taking the next step. Sometimes, faith means trusting God enough to move forward even when you cannot see the whole road.

So, make your plans. Dream about your future. Set meaningful goals. Work diligently. But above everything else, invite God into your plans and trust Him to direct your steps. 🙏❤️
