“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” — Matthew 22:37 KJV


EXPLANATION

Matthew 22:37 contains one of the most important teachings of Jesus about what it means to have a genuine relationship with God. In this verse, Jesus tells us that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. ❤️

But what does this really mean in everyday life?

This statement was given when one of the religious leaders asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest. Instead of pointing to a complicated religious rule, Jesus went straight to the foundation of our relationship with God: love. He teaches that our relationship with God should not be based merely on religious activities, traditions, or outward appearances. It should come from a sincere love for God that affects every part of who we are.

When Jesus says, “with all thy heart,” He is talking about the deepest part of our desires, emotions, intentions, and choices. Loving God with our heart means that God should not simply be someone we remember when we are in trouble. He should have a meaningful place in our everyday decisions, priorities, and desires.

❤️ Loving God with all your heart means choosing to value Him above the things that compete for your attention and affection.

Jesus also says we should love God with all our soul. This points to our entire being and life. In other words, our relationship with God should not be limited to Sunday worship, Bible reading, or moments of prayer. Our faith should influence how we live, how we treat people, how we handle money, how we respond to difficulties, and how we make important decisions.

Then Jesus says we should love God with all our mind. This reminds us that Christianity is not about switching off our ability to think. God wants us to know Him, understand His Word, seek wisdom, and allow our thoughts to be shaped by truth.

🧠 Loving God with your mind means intentionally directing your thoughts toward things that honour Him.

This verse therefore presents love for God as something that involves the whole person. It is not simply an emotion. It is a way of life.

Imagine a person saying, “I love God,” while deliberately living in a way that completely ignores God's teachings. Matthew 22:37 challenges us to examine whether our actions actually reflect the love we claim to have. Genuine love for God should gradually influence our behaviour.

However, this does not mean that a person must become perfect before they can love God. We all make mistakes. We sometimes become distracted, discouraged, selfish, or spiritually weak. The important thing is to continually turn our hearts back toward God and allow Him to transform us.

🙏 Loving God means seeking Him even when life is difficult. It means trusting Him when we do not understand what is happening. It means obeying Him when obedience is uncomfortable. It means thanking Him when things are going well and still holding on to Him when circumstances become challenging.

There is also an important lesson here about priorities. We live in a world filled with things competing for our attention—money, careers, entertainment, relationships, social media, possessions, ambitions, and personal success. None of these things is necessarily wrong by itself, but they can become unhealthy when they take the place that belongs to God.

Matthew 22:37 asks us a powerful question: What occupies the highest place in my heart?

If God truly comes first, that priority should eventually become visible in the way we live.

Jesus' teaching also shows us that loving God is not merely about saying prayers or attending religious gatherings. Those activities can be valuable, but they should flow from a genuine relationship with God rather than replace one.

🌱 God desires your heart, your soul, and your mind—not just your religious routine.

This verse can therefore serve as a daily spiritual check-up. Before beginning your day, you can ask yourself: “Am I putting God first today?” Before making a major decision, you can ask: “Does this choice reflect my love for God?” When dealing with another person, you can ask: “Does my response reflect the character God wants me to have?”

Loving God with everything we have is a lifelong journey. Some days we may feel spiritually strong, while on other days we may struggle. But the invitation remains the same: give God your whole heart. ❤️

Matthew 22:37 ultimately reminds us that our relationship with God should not be an occasional part of our lives. God should be at the centre of our lives. When our hearts, souls, and minds are directed toward Him, our relationship with Him begins to influence everything else.
