Matthew 5 Verse 6 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE 📖
Matthew 5:6 (KJV)
"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
EXPLANATION ✨
Matthew 5:6 is one of the powerful statements made by Jesus Christ during what is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount. In this verse, Jesus uses two basic human needs—hunger and thirst—to illustrate the kind of desire God wants His people to have for righteousness.
Every human being understands what it means to be hungry or thirsty. When a person has not eaten or drunk water for a long time, satisfying that need becomes a priority. Jesus says that those who have the same intense desire for righteousness are blessed.
But what is righteousness? 🤔 Righteousness means living in a way that is right before God. It involves obeying God's Word, seeking His will, loving others, showing integrity, and pursuing a life that reflects His character. It is not merely about appearing religious on the outside; it is about having a heart that genuinely longs to please God.
Jesus is teaching that there is a special blessing for those who earnestly seek God's ways. Just as food satisfies hunger and water satisfies thirst, God promises to satisfy the spiritual longing of those who seek Him wholeheartedly. "They shall be filled" means God will provide spiritual nourishment, guidance, peace, joy, and a deeper relationship with Him.
🌱 Many people spend their lives pursuing wealth, fame, status, or material possessions, believing these things will bring lasting satisfaction. While there is nothing wrong with success and achievement, they cannot fully satisfy the deepest needs of the human soul. Only God can truly fill the emptiness that people often experience within.
This verse also encourages believers to continue growing spiritually. Hunger and thirst are not one-time experiences; they are recurring needs. Likewise, followers of Christ should continually seek God's presence, wisdom, and righteousness every day. Spiritual growth happens when we consistently pray, study Scripture, worship, and apply God's truth in our lives.
💡 Another important lesson from this verse is that God notices the desires of our hearts. Even when we have not yet reached spiritual maturity, God honours the sincere desire to know Him more and to live according to His standards. A person who genuinely seeks righteousness is already moving in the right direction.
The promise attached to this verse is beautiful and reassuring. Jesus does not say that those who seek righteousness might be filled; He says they shall be filled. This is a promise from God Himself. Those who pursue Him will never be disappointed. God faithfully rewards those who seek Him with a sincere heart.
🙌 Therefore, Matthew 5:6 reminds us to examine our priorities. What are we passionately pursuing? Are we as eager for God's righteousness as we are for our daily needs? When we make God and His righteousness our greatest desire, He promises to satisfy our souls in ways that nothing else can.
Key Lesson: God blesses those who passionately seek His righteousness and promises to satisfy their deepest spiritual needs.
