Proverbs 13 Verse 20 Explained
π VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
✨ EXPLANATION
The book of Proverbs is filled with practical wisdom for everyday living, and Proverbs 13:20 is one of the most powerful reminders about the importance of the people we surround ourselves with. π€
This verse teaches that the company we keep can either build us up or lead us into destruction. The first part says:
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise...”
To “walk with” someone means to spend time with them, learn from them, follow their example, and stay connected with them. When you surround yourself with wise people, their wisdom begins to influence your thoughts, decisions, attitude, and lifestyle. π±
Wise people are those who fear God, make good decisions, speak positively, live with integrity, and encourage others to grow. Being around such people helps you become wiser in how you handle life, relationships, finances, work, and even your spiritual journey.
For example, if you stay close to people who are hardworking, disciplined, and prayerful, over time you will begin to develop those same habits. The people around you can shape your mindset more than you realize.
The second part of the verse gives a serious warning:
“...but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” ⚠️
In the Bible, a fool is not just someone who lacks knowledge. A fool is someone who rejects wisdom, ignores correction, lives carelessly, and refuses to follow God’s ways.
When a person constantly associates with foolish people, they can easily be influenced into bad habits, wrong decisions, trouble, and even destruction. Negative friendships can slowly pull someone away from their purpose and peace.
This does not mean we should hate or avoid helping people who are struggling. Jesus showed love to everyone. However, it means we should be careful about who influences our lives daily. ❤️
Many people have experienced unnecessary pain because of the wrong friendships or relationships. Some have gotten into trouble, lost opportunities, or damaged their future because they followed bad advice from the wrong crowd.
This verse encourages us to choose our friends wisely. Ask yourself:
- Do the people around me inspire me to grow?
- Do they encourage me to do what is right?
- Are they helping me become closer to God or farther away?
- Do they motivate me to improve my life?
Your environment matters. Your friendships matter. Your influences matter. π₯
One wise friendship can positively change your life, while one destructive friendship can lead you into regret. God wants us to build relationships that bring wisdom, peace, growth, and purpose.
As believers, we should seek godly friendships and also strive to become wise influences to others. Let your words, actions, and lifestyle encourage people toward truth and righteousness.
Remember this powerful truth: The people you walk with today can influence the direction of your future tomorrow.
π SELF REFLECTION
Take a moment to think about the people closest to you. Are your friendships helping you grow spiritually, mentally, and emotionally, or are they pulling you away from your purpose?
Sometimes God changes our lives by changing the people around us. π
What kind of influence do your friends have on your life, and what kind of influence are you on others?
