Matthew 6 Verse 3 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
Matthew 6:3 (KJV)
“But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.” π
EXPLANATION
This powerful teaching from Jesus appears in the Sermon on the Mount, where He explained the true meaning of righteousness and godly living. In Matthew 6:3, Jesus speaks about the right attitude believers should have when they help others or give to those in need.
The phrase “when thou doest alms” refers to acts of charity — helping the poor, giving to those in need, supporting others financially, or performing any act of kindness. During the time of Jesus, some people would give publicly so others could see and praise them. Their generosity was often done to gain attention, recognition, or admiration.
However, Jesus taught that true generosity should come from a pure heart ❤️, not from a desire to be praised by people.
When He said, “let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth”, He was using a figurative expression. Obviously, our hands cannot literally hide actions from each other. Instead, Jesus was emphasizing the importance of quiet, humble, and sincere giving.
This teaching encourages believers to practice generosity in a way that is:
- π€ Private rather than public
- ❤️ Sincere rather than performative
- π God-focused rather than people-focused
In other words, when we do good deeds, we should not do them simply to gain applause, social approval, or recognition. Our motivation should be to honour God and help others.
Sometimes people like to announce their good deeds, post them online, or make sure others know about their generosity. While sharing good works is not always wrong, the warning here is about the intention of the heart. If the goal is attention or praise, then the spiritual reward is already lost.
Jesus later explains in the surrounding verses that God sees what is done in secret. Even when no one else notices your kindness, your heavenly Father sees it and values it.
This truth is deeply comforting. It means that acts of love done quietly — helping someone financially, feeding someone who is hungry, supporting a struggling friend, or offering assistance without recognition — are all seen and remembered by God.
π‘ The key lesson in Matthew 6:3 is humility in generosity.
True righteousness does not seek applause. Instead, it flows naturally from a compassionate heart that desires to bless others.
Jesus teaches us that the value of giving is not measured by how many people see it, but by the sincerity of the heart behind it.
So whenever you give, help, support, or show kindness, remember this principle: do it for God, not for applause. π
SELF REFLECTION
Take a moment to reflect on your own acts of kindness.
π€ When you help someone, what is usually your motivation?
Do you sometimes hope others will notice your generosity or appreciate what you have done?
Or do you prefer to help quietly, knowing that God sees every good deed, even the ones no one else notices?
This verse challenges us to examine our hearts and intentions. It invites us to practice humble generosity — giving not for recognition but out of love and compassion.
