2 John 1 Verse 6 Explained
π VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
2 John 1:6 (KJV)
“And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”
✨ EXPLANATION
The book of 2 John is a short but powerful letter written by the Apostle John, one of the closest disciples of Jesus. Even though it contains only a few verses, it carries deep spiritual truth. In 2 John 1:6, John gives us a clear and practical definition of what true love really is.
Many people today define love as a feeling — something emotional, romantic, or sentimental. But this verse teaches us something deeper. It says, “this is love, that we walk after his commandments.” In other words, love is not just something we feel; it is something we live. ❤️
To “walk” in the Bible means to live your daily life in a certain way. It refers to your lifestyle, your decisions, your character, and your direction. So when the verse says we should “walk after His commandments,” it means our daily actions should align with what God has instructed.
This may surprise some people. How can love be connected to commandments? Isn’t love supposed to be free and unrestricted? But Jesus Himself made this connection clear in John 14:15: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Love and obedience are not enemies — they work together.
Here’s the key idea: Real love for God is shown through obedience to God. π
When you truly love someone, you care about what pleases them. You respect their desires. You value their guidance. In the same way, when we love God, we desire to follow His ways — not because we are forced, but because our hearts are aligned with Him.
The verse continues: “This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.” John reminds believers that this is not a new teaching. From the beginning of their faith, they were taught to live a life of love.
What does walking in love look like practically?
- Choosing forgiveness instead of bitterness π€
- Speaking truth instead of lies π£️
- Helping others instead of ignoring them ❤️
- Living morally and uprightly even when no one is watching π
God’s commandments are not meant to restrict us but to protect and guide us. They are like road signs on a highway. Without them, there would be chaos and accidents. With them, there is direction and safety.
This verse also teaches consistency. It says we should walk in it. Walking is continuous. It’s not a one-time act. Love is not something we practice only on Sundays or when it is convenient. It is a daily lifestyle.
Sometimes obedience can be difficult. There are moments when forgiving someone hurts. There are times when doing the right thing costs us something. But this verse reminds us that obedience motivated by love is powerful. π‘
It is also important to understand that we don’t earn God’s love by obeying Him. Instead, we obey because we have already received His love. When we understand how deeply God loves us, our response naturally becomes obedience.
In summary, 2 John 1:6 teaches that love is active, obedient, and consistent. It is not just words. It is not just emotion. It is a way of life. When we walk according to God’s commandments, we are walking in love.
πͺ SELF REFLECTION
Take a moment to reflect:
Do my daily actions reflect my love for God? Or is my love mostly expressed in words? π€
Is there an area in my life where I know God’s instruction, but I struggle to follow it?
What would change in my relationships, my decisions, and my character if I intentionally chose to “walk in love” every day?
Love is more than a feeling — it is a lifestyle. π¬ Share your thoughts in the comments: What does walking in God’s commandments look like in your everyday life?
