Proverbs 18 Verse 10 Explained

VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE

📖 Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

EXPLANATION

This powerful verse from the book of Proverbs paints a vivid picture that is easy to understand, even in our modern world. It uses the image of a strong tower 🏰—a place of protection, safety, and refuge—to describe the name of the LORD.

In ancient times, a strong tower was a fortified structure built within or near a city. When enemies attacked, the people would run into this tower because it was high, solid, and difficult to break into. It symbolised security, defence, and survival. By using this imagery, the Bible teaches us that God Himself is a place of safety for His people.

When the verse says “the name of the LORD”, it is not merely referring to the word “LORD” as a title. In biblical understanding, God’s name represents His character, power, authority, faithfulness, and presence. To trust in the name of the LORD means to rely fully on who God is—His promises, His strength, and His unchanging nature 🙏.

The second part of the verse says, “the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” This shows us that safety is not passive. The righteous do not casually walk or wait around; they run. This implies urgency, intention, and faith. When trouble comes—fear, confusion, temptation, danger, or uncertainty—the righteous person makes a conscious decision to turn to God immediately.

Being righteous does not mean being perfect or sinless. Rather, it refers to those who seek to live in right relationship with God, who trust Him, and who desire to follow His ways. Such people understand that true safety does not come from wealth, influence, human strength, technology, or connections, but from God alone 💡.

This verse is especially relevant today. In a world filled with insecurity—economic instability, health crises, violence, and emotional struggles—many people look for “strong towers” in the wrong places. Some trust money, some trust people, some trust power or intelligence. While these things may help temporarily, they can fail. God, however, never fails.

Proverbs 18:10 reminds us that no matter how intense the storm is, God remains a reliable refuge. When we pray, worship, call on His name, and depend on Him, we are running into that strong tower. And the promise is clear and reassuring: we are safe 🛡️.

SELF REFLECTION

💭 Take a moment to reflect:

  • When challenges arise in your life, where do you run first?
  • Do you rely more on your own strength or on God’s name?
  • What would it look like for you to truly make the LORD your strong tower today?

This verse invites us into a deeper trust in God. Share your thoughts in the comments below 👇. How has God been a place of safety for you in difficult times?
