Luke 2 Verse 9 to 10 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
Luke 2:9-10 (KJV)
“And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”
EXPLANATION
Luke 2:9–10 captures one of the most powerful and hope-filled moments in the Christmas story 🎄. The scene takes place in a quiet field where ordinary shepherds were watching over their flock at night. These shepherds were not kings, priests, or wealthy men. In fact, in their time, shepherds were considered lowly and often overlooked by society. Yet, it was to them that God chose to first announce the birth of Jesus Christ. This alone carries a deep and comforting message for us today 💛.
Verse 9 tells us that “the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them.” This was not a gentle or subtle moment. The glory of God is described in Scripture as overwhelming, radiant, and powerful ✨. It represents God’s holy presence. Imagine sitting in total darkness, then suddenly being surrounded by a divine light from heaven. It is no surprise that the shepherds were “sore afraid”. Their fear was a natural human response to encountering the supernatural.
However, verse 10 immediately shifts the tone. The angel speaks words that are still deeply relevant today: “Fear not.” These words appear many times throughout the Bible whenever God encounters humans. This tells us something important — God’s presence is not meant to destroy us, but to reassure us, guide us, and bless us 🙏.
The angel then delivers the heart of the message: “I bring you good tidings of great joy.” The phrase “good tidings” means good news or glad news. This was not ordinary good news; it was news that would change the course of human history forever. The birth of Jesus meant hope for the hopeless, forgiveness for sinners, light for those walking in darkness, and salvation for mankind 🌍.
Even more powerful is the statement that this joy “shall be to all people.” This means the message of Jesus is universal. It is not limited by race, nationality, gender, social status, or background. Whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated, young or old — the joy that Jesus brings is for everyone ❤️. This verse reminds us that God’s love has no boundaries.
In a world filled with fear, bad news, anxiety, and uncertainty, Luke 2:9–10 speaks directly to our hearts today. God still says, “Fear not.” He still offers good news. He still brings great joy. And that joy is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ, the Saviour who was born to bring peace between God and humanity 🌟.
SELF REFLECTION
Take a moment to reflect 🤔. What fears are you currently carrying in your heart? Are they fears about your future, finances, health, family, or purpose? Just as the angel spoke to the shepherds, God is speaking to you today: “Fear not.”
Ask yourself these questions:
- Do I truly believe that God’s good news and joy apply to me personally?
- Am I allowing fear to silence the joy that God wants me to experience?
- How can I share this message of hope and joy with others around me?
