Matthew 10 Verse 20 Explained

VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE:

“For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”Matthew 10:20 (KJV)

EXPLANATION:

Matthew 10:20 is a powerful and comforting Bible verse where Jesus speaks to His disciples before sending them out to preach the gospel. He warns them that they will face opposition, challenges, and even danger for spreading the truth. But in the middle of all these warnings, Jesus gives them a beautiful promise: they will not be alone. He tells them that when they stand before people—whether leaders, rulers, or anyone who challenges their message—they do not have to worry about what to say. Why? Because God Himself will speak through them.

This means that when believers face difficult situations because of their faith, God provides the right words at the right time. They don’t have to depend on their own wisdom or perfect speech. Instead, the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of God—guides them and gives them the courage and clarity they need.

Let’s break this down for your understanding.

Imagine you have to give a speech in front of the whole school. You’re nervous. Your hands are shaking. You’re scared you might forget your lines. Now imagine your teacher tells you, “Don’t worry, I’ll stand next to you. I’ll whisper the right words into your ear whenever you need them.” That would make you feel confident, right?

That is exactly what Jesus meant—but on an even more powerful level. When you are standing for your faith, you are not standing alone. God is standing with you. He gives you strength, wisdom, and even the right words to speak.

This verse reminds us that God does not just send us into the world to represent Him—He empowers us. He equips us. He speaks through us. He uses our voices to spread His truth and love. This is a sign of how deeply God cares for His children. He doesn't leave us to figure things out on our own.

But this verse also teaches another important lesson: we must trust the Holy Spirit. To trust Him means to allow God to guide our thoughts, our actions, and even our speech. It means being willing to step out in faith, knowing that God will fill the gaps where we feel weak.

In everyday life, this can apply to many situations:

  • When you need to speak up for what is right 💬
  • When you want to encourage a friend who is hurting ❤️
  • When you are trying to share your faith with someone 🙏
  • When you face pressure or criticism for doing what is right 💪

In all these moments, God reminds us: “You are not alone. I will speak through you.”

SELF REFLECTION:

👉 Have you ever been in a situation where you didn’t know what to say, but the right words came at the right time? 👉 Do you trust the Holy Spirit to guide your speech when you face challenges? 👉 How can you rely more on God’s wisdom instead of your own understanding?
