Matthew 7 Verse 8 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE
Matthew 7:8 (KJV) – "For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."
EXPLANATION
This verse is part of Jesus’ teaching during the Sermon on the Mount. It is a very simple yet powerful promise that shows God’s love and openness toward those who sincerely come to Him. Let’s break it down in a way a 10th grader can easily understand. π
π "For every one that asketh receiveth" – This means that when you ask God for something in prayer, He hears you. God is not like some people who ignore requests. He is a loving Father who listens. This doesn’t mean you’ll always get exactly what you asked for (like a new phone or instant money π ). Instead, God gives you what is best for you, even if it’s different from what you imagined.
π "And he that seeketh findeth" – Seeking means going beyond just asking; it means actively looking for God’s will, wisdom, and direction. Imagine losing your house key—you don’t just sit down and hope it appears. You search carefully until you find it. In the same way, if we seek God with our hearts through prayer, studying His Word, and living in obedience, we will discover His truth and guidance for our lives.
π "And to him that knocketh it shall be opened" – Knocking represents persistence. When you knock on someone’s door, you expect them to eventually open it. God is saying, “If you keep coming to Me, I will open the door for you.” This door could be an opportunity, an answer to prayer, or even deeper spiritual understanding. It shows that God rewards consistency and faith.
π‘ In summary, this verse teaches us that God is approachable, generous, and responsive to those who genuinely reach out to Him. Asking, seeking, and knocking are progressive actions:
- Asking is the starting point (praying to God).
- Seeking is putting in effort (studying, obeying, and searching for His will).
- Knocking is persistence (not giving up until you receive your answer).
This shows that faith is not passive. It requires action, trust, and patience. God promises that if you truly desire to know Him and His will, He will never turn you away. π
SELF REFLECTION
Think about this for a moment: Are you only asking God for things, or are you also seeking His will and knocking persistently on His door? π️
For example, maybe you’ve been praying about passing an exam, getting into a school, or helping your family in a hard time. Beyond asking, are you studying hard, being disciplined, or trusting God’s timing? Sometimes we want quick answers, but God might be teaching us persistence and patience.
