Ephesians 2 Verse 8 to 9 Explained
VERSE OF THE DAY SCRIPTURE 📖
Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
EXPLANATION ✨
These two verses from the book of Ephesians are some of the most powerful words in the entire Bible about salvation and grace. The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in Ephesus to help them understand how salvation really works. Let’s break it down in a simple way so even a 10th grader can grasp its deep meaning.
Paul begins by saying, “For by grace are ye saved through faith.” The word grace means “unearned favour.” It’s like when someone gives you a gift you didn’t earn or deserve. In this case, that “someone” is God. Grace is God’s love and kindness freely given to us even though we’ve made mistakes and fallen short. 🕊️
Next, the verse says we are saved through faith. That means we receive this gift of salvation when we believe and trust in Jesus Christ — not by doing something to earn it. Faith is simply believing that Jesus died for your sins, rose again, and offers you eternal life. It’s like reaching out your hand to accept a gift that’s already been paid for. 🎁
Paul then makes something very clear: “And that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” This means we cannot take credit for our salvation. It doesn’t come from how good we are, how many times we go to church, or how many good deeds we do. Salvation is not something we earn; it’s something we receive from God because of His love. ❤️
Finally, verse 9 says, “Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Imagine if getting to heaven was based on how many good things you did — people would start bragging, comparing, and feeling proud of themselves. But God doesn’t want that. He wants us to realise that it’s all about His mercy and kindness, not about our own efforts. 🙏
In simple terms, these verses teach us that salvation = God’s grace + our faith (not our works). When we believe in Jesus, we accept the greatest gift ever — eternal life and a restored relationship with God. We do good works not to earn salvation, but to show gratitude for it. 🕊️💖
SELF REFLECTION 💭
Take a moment and think about this: Have you ever tried to earn someone’s love or approval by doing good things? That’s how many people approach God — trying to earn His love. But He already loves you, more than you can imagine. His grace is not something you earn; it’s something you simply receive by faith.
